Tywardreath Rural Gardening Society
The gardening society with its first exhibition commencing in 1830 is reported to be one of the oldest in the country. The society held its last exhibition in August 2003. At a General Meeting held in March 2003 it was reported that it was unable to elect a committee as no one was willing to stand for the position of Chairman, and therefore the society is at this time suspended. Finally in August 2006 the committee reported that it was formally decided to wind up the Society, having failed to find a Chairman. The assets of the Society are to be disposed as follows: Several tables, bought by the Society over the years for use in St Andrew's Hall, will remain in the Hall. Various cups and trophies will remain with those who last won them. The liquid assets of the Society will be given to the Village Fete Committee for future distribution amongst village organisations.
On Saturday 10th August 2013, the village again held a Show in the Village Hall with categories of Flowers, Vegetables, Cookery, Art & Crafts, Photography as well as two sections for different age groups for children.
The society has been very much a highlight of village social activity over the years. More information on the society for years 1836, 1837, 1853 and 1854, including prizewinners for some the the years, can be found at the appropriate year on the History Timeline page.
